General Gardening Tips

Tips for your new plants

  1. BEFORE YOU PLANT know your plants requirements: Sun or Shade, Wet or Dry, Heavy or Light Soils. Place them where they will thrive!
  2. Soil is everything to your plants. Give them a boost by adding compost to the garden beds.
  3. Dig the hole slightly larger than the pot. Fill with water and allow to drain.
  4. Prepare the plant. Water plants before planting. Loosen the root ball by ‘teasing’ the roots outward. Place plant upright in the hole with the base of the plant even with the soil surface and fill in the amended soil. Lightly firm the soil surface and fill in with your amended soil. Form a ‘well’ by slightly mounding the soil surrounding the plant, to help catch and keep moisture around the plant.
  5. Water thoroughly. It is crucial to keep your new plants well-watered during the first season while the roots are becoming established. Even drought tolerate plants need extra drinks during their first season.
  6. As the weather warms, spread organic mulch around your plants, keeping the stem area clear. Mulch helps in a variety of ways – holds moisture, keeps the roots cool and helps prevent weeds.
